G.I. Joe was announced by me and John Barber. Here are the steps that led to the final image that was used for the announcement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1183\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1183\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1183\" alt=\"PrimeMegatronDukeDestroFinalS\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/PrimeMegatronDukeDestroFinalS.jpg\" width=\"468\" height=\"710\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d pitched a number of possible compositions with the idea of it being big, bold and Kirbyesque. This is the one we settled on, trying to capture the essence of Kirby&#8217;s big fisheye lens warped-perspective battles like Daredevil #43 or Captain America #106, with Destro and Duke fighting in the foreground like Destro and Col. Hawk from Herb Trimpe&#8217;s excellent cover to G.I.Joe #6 (one of my favorite \u00a0issues of the series).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1185\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1185\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1185\" alt=\"Daredev43\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Daredev43.jpg\" width=\"449\" height=\"621\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1184\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1184\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1184\" alt=\"CoverConceptA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/CoverConceptA.jpg\" width=\"432\" height=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1188\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1188\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1188\" alt=\"Hawk\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Hawk.jpg\" width=\"461\" height=\"494\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition to taking inspiration from Trimpe&#8217;s Joe cover for Destro and Duke, I also wanted to capture some of the extreme body language in Orion and Darkseid&#8217;s big battle to the death in Kirby&#8217;s New Gods story &#8220;Even Gods Must Die!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1186\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1186\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1186\" alt=\"Orion\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Orion.jpg\" width=\"288\" height=\"441\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Trying to channel the combined essence of these images while maintaining my own voice, I take a first pass at the pencils:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1187\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1187\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1187\" alt=\"PrimeMegatronDukeDestroV1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/PrimeMegatronDukeDestroV1.jpg\" width=\"389\" height=\"598\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I feel like the fist needs to be bigger to really sell the perspective.\u00a0Here it is with the bigger badder fist:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1189\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1189\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1189\" alt=\"PrimeMegatronDukeDestroV2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/PrimeMegatronDukeDestroV2.jpg\" width=\"432\" height=\"572\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s the inked version.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1190\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1190\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1190\" alt=\"PrimeMegatronInk\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/PrimeMegatronInk.jpg\" width=\"504\" height=\"622\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here it is with eye-searing psychedelic color:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1191\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1191\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1191\" alt=\"PrimeMegatronV3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/PrimeMegatronV3.jpg\" width=\"432\" height=\"676\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If this were &#8220;Starmorrfens vs. The Icelandic Army&#8221; this cover would be perfect, but it&#8217;s &#8220;Transformers vs. G.I. Joe.&#8221; I can take these characters into whatever crazy realm the story demands, but they still need to be recognizable as the characters they are. There&#8217;s a learning curve to getting comfortable with drawing characters you haven&#8217;t drawn before, and with each attempt the likenesses keep getting better. Paying careful attention to keeping the characters on-model, while still putting my stamp on them, I make alterations to the figures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1193\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1193\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1193\" alt=\"Pasteup\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Pasteup.jpg\" width=\"504\" height=\"591\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s the finished cover, utilizing the same palette that I used for American Barbarian. I&#8217;m pleased with the results and am looking forward to sharing other images I&#8217;ve drawn for this series when the time is right. I&#8217;ve been experimenting with a range of styles.
