I&#8217;ve always been curious what Kirby&#8217;s art would look like if the inking process was skipped, and his pencil art was colored directly. I thought I&#8217;d try it myself. I chose a sequence from &#8220;The Mighty Thor.&#8221;&nbsp;Here&#8217;s the original printed version. It&#8217;s a classic example of clearly-delineated traditional comic book art, inked by Vince Colletta, Kirby&#8217;s main artistic collaborator on Thor:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1349\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1349\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1349\" alt=\"ThorPrint\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ThorPrint.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"428\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here is a photostat of Kirby&#8217;s original pencil drawing, printed in The Jack Kirby Collector. I love the softness of the lines, and the rich tonal quality. This is from an old photostat, state-of-the-art in the sixties. One can only imagine what a high-resolution scan of the pencils would look like. Looking at Kirby&#8217;s pencil drawing, his oft-cited Alex Raymond influence becomes much more apparent:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1350\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1350\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1350\" alt=\"ThorPencil\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ThorPencil.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"420\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I created a layer of flat color:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1351\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1351\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1351\" alt=\"ThorFlat\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ThorFlat.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"428\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I softened the forms and added some texture:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1352\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1352\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1352\" alt=\"ThorColorandTexture\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ThorColorandTexture.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"434\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then I added a yellowed newsprint texture to hold everything together:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/?attachment_id=1353\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1353\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1353\" alt=\"ThorColor\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambarb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/ThorColor.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"443\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did this exercise quickly, as a fun warm-up between issues of Transformers vs. G.I.Joe, but you can see the potential in this approach. It&#8217;s a different aesthetic for Kirby that is every bit as valid as the ways his work has traditionally been presented.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Mighty Thor&#8221; is property of Marvel Comics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.previewsworld.com\/Home\/1\/1\/71\/937?stockItemID=STK634540\">Transformers vs. G.I.
